Competitive Programming

Team and individual computer programming contests are gaining in popularity world-wide. These contests can be used to motivate students and to enhance their learning experience. They can also be used by individuals to "show their stuff" and boost their professional reputations. See http://FrankAckerman.web.officelive.com/compProg.aspx

What are some of the more popular programming competitions?

The oldest and most prestigious competition is the Association for Computing Machinery International College Programming Contest (http://cm2prod.baylor.edu/login.jsf). Each year a major corporation sponsors the contest (currently (2007) IIBM). The contest is open only to college students world wide. They compete in teams of three but use only a single workstation.

For the past several years Microsoft has been running a multi-track contest it calls The Imagine Cup (http://imaginecup.com/About/WhatIs.aspx). The contest is open to all currently registered students world-wide who are 16 years or older.

The commercial web site www.topcoder.com runs a continuous series of individual contests in several different tracks that culminate in periodic tournaments with cash prizes. Major tournaments are sponsored by corporations and government agency. There are no restrictions on who can participate.
